What is thesis editing and how is it different from editing other academic content?
In this webinar, Laurel Mackinnon will answer these questions and more in an hour-long session.
Whether you are new to thesis editing or simply looking for a refresher, the Thesis Editing Webinar will be informative and enjoyable viewing.

  • generic structure of a thesis

  • overview of IPEd Guidelines for editing research theses

  • similarities and differences between old and new guidelines

  • substantive editing vs. copyediting in theses

  • proposed anti-cheating legislation.

Laurel Mackinnon, PhD, ELS, was an academic for 20 years and has worked as a medical and science writer and editor for the past 19 years, specialising in editing academic work by researchers who are not native English speakers. She is currently chair of the Subcommittee on Academic Editing and led the 'Pod' that revised IPEd's recently released Guidelines for editing research theses. Laurel has taught effective professional and science writing and editing in Australia and Asia. She was the editing team manager for OnLine English, the first international online editing service for academic and research communications, where she was responsible for training and managing 70 editors. She has published more than 65 papers, six books and 12 book chapters, and is an Honorary Associate Professor and former Associate Professor at The University of Queensland. Laurel presented a talk on Predatory academic publishing at the IPEd national conference in May.
