From the sky to the page: using aviation to fuel romantic suspense
Wednesday 4 June 2014
GUEST SPEAKER: Helene Young, Qantas pilot and romance/crime novelist
Our guest speaker for June is Australian romantic suspense writer and QantasLink Regional Manager, Captain Helene Young.
Helene's fascination with aviation started as a child holidaying at Currumbin Beach, watching the planes coming in to land at nearby Coolangatta Airport. 'You could count the rivets on the wings, and see the treads on the Dunlops when they went over the roof,' Helene recently told Radio National interviewer Natasha Mitchell. Helene's summer holidays at the beach shack sparked her flying career, which, for 25 years, saw Helene crisscrossing Queensland and the Coral Sea to Port Moresby flying Dash 8s. Recently, Helene shifted from Cairns to Brisbane to take up QantasLink's regional manager role where she now manages 260 pilots - almost all male - many of whom love reading her romantic suspense novels.
Please come and join your fellow editors to listen as Helene decodes pilot-speak and liberally offers up action and romance in From the sky to the page: using aviation to fuel romantic suspense.
