Wednesday 28 August 2013
Our guest speaker for the 2013 AGM is Honorary Member, IPEd patron and language scholar, Professor Roland (Roly) Sussex.
Roly is Professor Emeritus of Applied Language Studies at The University of Queensland (UQ), where he taught and researched from 1989 until his retirement in 2010. Previously, he taught Linguistics and Russian at the University of Reading in the UK, and Monash University in Melbourne. He is currently research fellow at the Centre for Educational Innovation and Technology, and in the School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies, at UQ. Roly writes a weekly column on language for the Brisbane Courier-Mail, and broadcasts on ABC radio to Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory. He is Chair of the Library Board of Queensland, and President of the Alliance Française of Brisbane. Last year, he became a Member of the Order of Australia.
At our AGM, following the formal agenda, voting and appointment of the Management Committee, Roly will buck the trend set at our recent general meetings by avoiding PowerPoint and digital projection. The aim will be to converse and exchange views, and, perhaps, disagree, as he leads a discussion, en table ronde, about prestige English in Australia.
Who is the best speaker of English in Australia, and why? This will be the kick-off question. Each language Roly is familiar with has a prestige variant: a way of speaking and writing that has special status, one that is used by the powerful or influential - politically, socially and culturally. A monolithic language such as French has a clearly defined prestige variant, blessed by the Académie Française and propagated by powerful people, the media, and educational and public institutions. Does English compare? What are the current prestige variants of English? Who propagates them and manages them? How do the variants relate to each other? What effect do they have on the everyday use of English?
Curious? Of course you are. Please join your fellow editors and come to our AGM for what is sure to be a riveting and enlightening en table ronde.
